By the Lake at Kellerman's, Thursday Afternoon
What Jonothon knew about canoeing could be summed up in very few words: There is a boat. There are paddles. Somehow, you use one in order to propel the other, and pray you don't fall in.

Not that he was particularly worried about falling in. Fears of drowning were pretty much obliterated along with his need to breathe. And anyhow, there were lifejackets. Lifejackets which, he had to note, looked absolutely ridiculous.

//The bright orange'll be a good look on yer, luv,// he mused, leaning over the edge of the wharf to peer into the canoe.

[For the daaaate. Stuck here so as to not risk breaking the Kellerman's posts. I'm done spamming the flist today, promise!]

"I don't have any other dates today," Didi told him, following his glance. "Just ... this. And you."

Deliberately, she all but stopped paddling.

"We have time."

Jono dabbled about with the paddle in the water for a moment more, and then he smiled that crinkle-eyed smile of his, looking back toward her as he pulled his oar back into the boat.

//We could very well stay out here on into the evening, couldn't we?//

Finding their way back to shore after dark couldn't be all that difficult.

"Think anyone would miss us?" And, oops, her foot tapped into his.

They could swim back to shore if they had to.

//Oh, everybody,// Jono decided, a smirk somewhere in his expression as he lifted his toe and gently tapped the top of Didi's foot under his boot. Kind of a 'caught you,' moment, right there. //I imagine the whole population of the campground will be out lookin' for us. There'll be a fanfare when we see fit to return, no doubt.//

Didi laughed. "Right, and they'll be joining arms to form a human chain and comb the woods if we aren't in bed for lights out."

//And if that doesn't work, they'll likely release the hounds,// Jonothon suggested.

Hey, he'd be easy to track. They'd just have to follow the smell of burning... something or other. It was a very distinct scent, really.

"That would be interesting," Didi said. "I like dogs. Not sure about rescue dogs."

//I haven't got any experience with rescue dogs, myself. But I suppose so long as we're out here, we don't have to worry much about them saving us, do we?//

A pause.

//Or, wait. Dogs swim, don't they? That's just what we need. A lapful of helpful wet bloodhound hoppin' into the boat to save th'day.//

"And then we'd really find out how cold the water is in October," Didi said with a laugh. "I don't care how friendly the dog is, that would not be fun."

//And then we'd have to escort it back to th'shore,// Jono added. //I suppose that'd be as good an excuse as any to go warm up by th'campfire, or some such thing.//

Or Jono could warm them both up, but 'I provide heat with the roiling psionic furnace that blew off my chest' didn't really seem romantic.

At all.

Didi eyed him. "You want to watch me eat s'mores?" she asked.

Ignoring, for the moment, her date's possible functions as a space heater, yes.

//Absolutely,// Jono agreed, as if he was duty-bound to do so. It was a very solemn decision that he'd just come to now. Really. //Someone has to be around to laugh when yer get yerself covered in melted marshmallow and chocolate.//

"You forgot to mention the graham cracker crumbs," Didi said, equally serious. "They're key to the gestalt, right? Otherwise all you have is sugar."

//Of course. At least with the graham, yer can pretend that yer eating a health food.//

Because graham crackers were totally healthy! Really!

"The guy who invented them thought they were one," Didi informed him. "But it was the 19th century. If it didn't have gravy on it, it was healthy."
