By the Lake at Kellerman's, Thursday Afternoon
What Jonothon knew about canoeing could be summed up in very few words: There is a boat. There are paddles. Somehow, you use one in order to propel the other, and pray you don't fall in.

Not that he was particularly worried about falling in. Fears of drowning were pretty much obliterated along with his need to breathe. And anyhow, there were lifejackets. Lifejackets which, he had to note, looked absolutely ridiculous.

//The bright orange'll be a good look on yer, luv,// he mused, leaning over the edge of the wharf to peer into the canoe.

[For the daaaate. Stuck here so as to not risk breaking the Kellerman's posts. I'm done spamming the flist today, promise!]

"Everyone's cute to somebody," Didi told him, undaunted. "And that's an incredibly sweet theory, but I'm good with what I'm wearing. Though at least you aren't threatening me with Disney princess dresses."

She eyed the canoe. "I haven't gotten one of these into the water in forever."

//If by 'in forever,' yer mean yer actually have experience with one, then yer have me beat, sunshine,// Jono noted, relenting and putting his lifejacket on anyhow. He didn't really need it, but that didn't mean he was willing to let Didi suffer in one alone. //I'm not exactly the last of the great outdoorsmen.//

Which meant, mostly, that this was going to be something of an adventure, didn't it?

"If you let me get wet, so help me, I'll let the ducks get you," Didi insisted cheerily, but went up to the canoe. "I think we just walk it to the edge and push off."

2009-10-15 08:07 pm (UTC) (Link)

//Walk it to the edge with us in it, right?//

... Look, sometimes, you just had to ask these things.

//Because I'm not about to go chasin' after th'boat.//

2009-10-16 12:28 am (UTC) (Link)

"... right," Didi said.

She was not exactly an expert, but she was undaunted as she started the process of guiding the boat toward the water. "This will work."

2009-10-16 12:32 am (UTC) (Link)

//And if it doesn't, that's what the lifejackets are for,// Jono mused.

Because they would both so totally drown in two feet of water, here.

With a shrug, he stepped over to the other side of the boat and helped her along.

2009-10-16 12:41 am (UTC) (Link)

Hey, technically speaking, Didi had already drowned in two feet of water.

A moment later, they were afloat. Didi shot a grin of triumph at Jono. "See? Easy-peasy."

2009-10-16 12:44 am (UTC) (Link)

Jono couldn't help but give her a triumphant expression of her own.

//And we're floating and everything,// he agreed. //How long der yer suppose it'll take before we manage to upend this thing?//

He reached for a paddle. And kind of stared at it. And stared at it some more.

//I've got my money on 'not long at all.//

2009-10-16 12:54 am (UTC) (Link)

"It's life. It's a learning experience," Didi said. She took the other paddle and kind of waved it at the water, barely dipping it in enough to wet the end. " ... the water's probably cold."

2009-10-16 01:02 am (UTC) (Link)

//Cold water in October?// He laughed a little, shaking his head. //Next, yer going to try to tell me that it snows in the wintertime, too.//

Look, he never claimed that he wasn't a bit of a brat.

He contemplated the paddle for a moment or two more, and then gave it a stroke through the water. The canoe turned a little. Huh.

2009-10-16 01:21 am (UTC) (Link)

And Didi reciprocated the stroke with her own paddle and, lo and behold -- they moved.

Toward a rock, but still. Movement.

"That's crazy talk," Didi told him, laughing. "Snow? Winter? What weird world did you grow up in?"

2009-10-16 01:27 am (UTC) (Link)

//The same weird world where ancient Irish castles get eaten by sentient mist,// Jono reported, attempting a few more strokes in the vain hope that they could steer around that rock. //And, yer know... Deadpool.//

'Deadpool' was pretty much all that one needed to state in order to properly summarize the full extent of the weirdness that his world could achieve.

Oh, 616.

2009-10-16 01:34 am (UTC) (Link)

"Deadpool," Didi echoed wryly. "He's one of yours, huh?"

Oh, that might be fun. Just like the rock that they were still drifting toward.

2009-10-16 01:38 am (UTC) (Link)

//I'd never had the particular pleasure of meeting him, until I found myself here,// Jono replied, and now his paddling was slightly more urgent. Breaking the canoe would be bad. //But he seems to know who I am. Even if he can't hear me speak.//

Which was weird, if you asked Jono. But then, Jono had somewhat unique measures of weird, from time to time.

2009-10-16 01:43 am (UTC) (Link)

Didi reached out with her paddle to shove them off the bank and, hopefully, away from the rock.

"See, he just thinks I'm his ex-girlfriend," Didi said. "That was even weirder than the girl whose mom is me in bizarro world."

Didi had her own special values for weird.
