Room 408, Monday Afternoon
Well. Jonothon's first day of classes had been... Educational.

In Science class, he'd been offered a position as a TA, which had caught him off-guard, really. The people gawping at him when he'd spoken in that Religion class was a little more like what he'd been expecting ever since he'd arrived here, though people seemed to rather consistently take his voice in stride right up until that point.

He was trying damn hard not to dwell on any of it too much. He would have to head into town sometime, to see if they had a music store of some sort. And he needed clothing. He could hardly wear the same outfit for the rest of his time here, and laundry was a particular challenge when you didn't have the option of standing around shirtless, anyhow. He'd have to ask Ben what he knew about the places in town where he could get both or either.

For the time being, he'd settle for flopping backward on his bed and staring up at the ceiling.

Ceilings were bloody boring.

[[The door is open if anybody wants to poke at the kind of smelly guy. Will be a shameless linkdrop soon enough, as well. Because I'm just sneaky like that.]]

Hey, Jak could appreciate that. Which was why Jono got a look that was completely appreciative. He sat up, leaning back against the headboard of his bed, and nodded.

He could have considered writing to people to get them to know what he was talking about, but, well. Language barrier, much?

And Jono appreciated that he was doing something around here that somebody could appreciate. It worked out nicely, that way.

He reached to pick his lone notebook from the nightstand, and then patted down his pockets for a pen. After a moment, he finally located one, and then flipped to a fresh page and wrote in an almost ridiculously tidy hand in all-caps;

MY NAME IS JAK

He considered the page for a moment, and then gave a short, satisfied nod before tearing it out and handing it over.

Jak reached over to take it and...

...paused.

He pointed at his mouth. Then he pointed at the paper. Communication might go a lot smoother if Jono minded adding in 'YES, I DON'T TALK', maybe? If he managed to, uh, get that across. Jak hoped he was getting that across.

Jono managed to get the general gist of it, more or less. Either Jak was trying to indicate that he wanted people to feed him, or else he would like it pointed out that the whole 'talking' thing was a challenge.

Considering he was having Jono draw up a sign for him and all, he sincerely doubted it was the former.

//Right then,// he replied, putting the pen to the paper again and glancing up thoughtfully. //How does 'My name is Jak, I have difficulty speaking' sound to yer?//

Well, difficulty didn't completely encompass Jak's issue, but he could live with that. He gave Jono a thumbs up. That would work. That would entirely work.

He was lucky to have a roommate like that. Seriously.

Difficulty made it sound like a speech impediment. Neither of the boys in room 408 had impediments. They just never opened their mouths to make words come out.

Theirs was possibly the quietest occupied dorm room in the building, wasn't it?

Jonothon wrote the rest onto the sheet, and then pocketed his pen again before sliding the paper Jak's way.

//Yer probably want to get some kind of cover slip for that,// he noted, //Or else we'll be making a new one for yer every day. Then again, it would be good practise for yer to get used to it yerself.//

They could probably turn this dorm room into a Room of Silence. If Jak didn't have the amount of energy that he did - or if Jono didn't smell like he did - it might even be a nice place for meditation.

He reached out to take the paper with another grateful smile, nodding along at the cover slip idea. He should... well, he wasn't going to pin it to his chest, because that wasn't exactly what you would call cool, but he was going to fold it very carefully and tuck it into his pocket.

That would work.

See, what Jono really needed was to pick up some nice incense or something when he finally got around to shopping for things he'd need around here. A nice stick of sandalwood on the proper side of his bandages, and...

... No.

//Let me know if yer need help with another one in the future, Jak, and we'll whip another up for yer. Not a problem. Maybe get you a more sturdy nametag or something.// A pause. //Hell, I could probably make use of one, too. I still have time to grab one before my next class this week.//

Jono wasn't particularly looking forward to another round of introductions in the classroom, no. Being stared at was mortifying.
