Room 408, Monday Afternoon
Well. Jonothon's first day of classes had been... Educational.

In Science class, he'd been offered a position as a TA, which had caught him off-guard, really. The people gawping at him when he'd spoken in that Religion class was a little more like what he'd been expecting ever since he'd arrived here, though people seemed to rather consistently take his voice in stride right up until that point.

He was trying damn hard not to dwell on any of it too much. He would have to head into town sometime, to see if they had a music store of some sort. And he needed clothing. He could hardly wear the same outfit for the rest of his time here, and laundry was a particular challenge when you didn't have the option of standing around shirtless, anyhow. He'd have to ask Ben what he knew about the places in town where he could get both or either.

For the time being, he'd settle for flopping backward on his bed and staring up at the ceiling.

Ceilings were bloody boring.

[[The door is open if anybody wants to poke at the kind of smelly guy. Will be a shameless linkdrop soon enough, as well. Because I'm just sneaky like that.]]

//Not upset, at me, really,// he replied, lifting one shoulder in a half-shrug. Dismissive. He was fine. //I was a bit of a distraction in my classes today. Introductions.//

He tapped the side of his head idly with one finger.

//Not everybody is so good at weird. There are still a few out there who need to take a moment to stop and stare, I've found.//

Didi didn't think he was fine.

"They probably didn't get out enough," she said gently. "Seriously, I don't know what happened to you, but ... it's life, right? Which doesn't make it cool that people stare at you."

2009-09-01 01:41 am (UTC) (Link)

//It's life,// Jono echoed. //'Cool' or not, it's life. The staring's going to be a part of that, like it or not. It's just something else to get used to.//

... Though he appreciated the sentiment. A good deal. It helped.

2009-09-01 01:53 am (UTC) (Link)

"How long has it been?" Didi wondered. "You sound almost okay about it. Sort of."

She quirked her mouth. "If 'okay' is a sliding scale."

2009-09-01 01:59 am (UTC) (Link)

//Very sliding,// Jono allowed, reaching a hand to rub absently at the back of his neck. //It's been a matter of months. But it isn't something that's likely to just up and go away. Either I accept that it's there, or it eats away at my insides. I've had enough of the latter.//

Mostly. Kinda.

If 'insides' were a sliding scale.

"Couple years ago," Didi said quietly, as she took a seat near Jono, "I met this woman. A God had given her the power to turn herself into any element she wanted." She shrugged. "She hated not being normal. She spent her time locked in her apartment, calling her benefits guy and making faces out of silicon that would dry up and fall off. It was about the saddest thing I've ever seen."

"So -- yeah. On the sliding scale, better than that."

2009-09-01 02:46 am (UTC) (Link)

//Better than that,// Jonothon agreed, though his tone was somewhat dubious. He didn't exactly have the most healthy coping strategies under the sun himself. Though... At least he was making an effort to face the world at large.

That was better than that.

//I wouldn't mind a bit of normal. But yer take it where yer can get it.//

2009-09-01 02:57 am (UTC) (Link)

"Mmmm, much better than that." And somehow Didi's boots were very interesting. She shook her hair out of her face. "So ... I should probably tell you I'm not -- well, I'm nobody special right now. But that's not the whole story."

It was so much easier when she could drop this nonchalantly into the middle of a conversation.

2009-09-01 03:05 am (UTC) (Link)

//When is it ever the whole story?// That was an eyebrow, quirking upward just slightly as Jono embraced the switch in topics almost desperately. Yes, talking about her. He could handle that, absolutely.

2009-09-01 03:13 am (UTC) (Link)

"Sometimes it is. You'd be surprised," Didi said, gaze still on those boots. "Funny story. I'm Death."

2009-09-01 03:36 am (UTC) (Link)

... Maybe a few days ago, that might have sounded weirder to Jono.

Then again, he'd seen some pretty odd things even before a few days ago, so it might have been a difficult call.

He had to make sure. It was more a curiosity than anything else, at this point.

2009-09-01 12:18 pm (UTC) (Link)

Didi nodded. "It's a whole deal. One day in every hundred years, Death becomes mortal. I got stuck this time." She raised an eyebrow at him. "Going to ask where my scythe is?"

2009-09-01 12:23 pm (UTC) (Link)

//I figured yer probably left it in the weapons locker when yer got 'ere,// Jonothon replied with a bit of a shrug of his shoulders.

Having a pleasant conversation with Death was a bit of a thing to get his head around, true. But who was he to judge? He was sitting there with no guts, carrying on this same pleasant conversation, taking her at her word because she was being nice to him.

//I've seen stranger, luv. And it explains why yer weren't so put off by the way I talk, for a start.//

2009-09-01 12:31 pm (UTC) (Link)

Didi laughed. "Yeah. Scythe, hooded robe, the whole deal. They made me chuck all of it in there."

"But" -- she added, reaching out to poke him in the arm. "you are right that I've seen weirder ways to talk than hearing English in my head."

2009-09-01 12:33 pm (UTC) (Link)

//It could always be weirder, luv,// Jonothon replied, his own voice almost a laugh in turn. Oh, he liked this one. //It could be French. Or Gaelic.//

See? English in the brain was perfectly normal.

[I'm running out for the day to help Tris mooooove. Revenge of the SP for great justice?]
