The Massachusetts Academy, Early Spring
Jono had a dilemma.

Or, more accurately, Jono had a whole host of dilemmas, all wrapped up into one tidy little envelope, sitting on his nightstand and staring him in the face. In part, of course, because of his face. The letter was, after all, from Xavier. And accepting the proposal in the letter meant a good many things. Leaving Massachusetts. Leaving Angelo and Jubilee and the others behind. He'd done that once before, when he wound up on Fandom Island, and he wasn't entirely certain if doing it now counted as running, or simply moving forward.

And there was the rest of the dilemma, there. Things had been insane for the members of Generation X, lately. Busy, heartbreaking, not particularly easy, and everybody was dealing with these things in their own ways. Surprisingly, the biggest changes to be seen were in Emma and Sean, both of whom were beginning to worry the surviving members of the team. Now would be some pretty rotten timing for Jono to take Xavier up on his offer to join the X-Men. Right?

His eyebrows furrowed a little as he stared again at the letter, and then shook his head, shoving it into his nightstand. He'd sleep on it for a few more nights, and maybe that would help him figure out just where he wanted to go from here. In the meantime, he was pulling out his phone and firing off a short e-mail to his friends.

Believe it or not, I miss you guys. How have things been?

Jonothon's conversation-starting skills needed work. But it was either this, or listen to Paige go on about rescuing trees from some money-hungry oil corporation for the millionth time.

[NFB for distance, but Open for texts, e-mails, surprise multidimensional visits, anything you don't need a mouth for. If you figure your character got Jono's amazingly verbose e-mail, they did, sure! I'm actually around again! Yay, around again!]

//I suppose there is that,// Jono agreed. //I was planning on just... sleeping on it for a while longer. I mean, if Xavier wants me on his team, he wants me there for a reason... right?//

It was entirely possible that Jono was mostly just hoping that if he slept on it long enough, the invitation would revoke itself and he wouldn't have to make the decision.

"I do not know him or his thoughts, but I do not think he would invite you to join them if he did not want you there," Raven said.

She glanced over at the envelope again. "May I read it?" she said.

Jono blinked his eyes open at that, and then nodded a little, reaching one hand over to his nightstand to collect the letter so that he could offer it to her.

Inside, two pages, typed neatly under Xavier's letterhead, formally outlining the purpose of Xavier's School, the role of the X-Men in the world today, and exactly why Jonothon was a prime candidate for the team.

//It's all a bunch of formal gibberish. I got a letter near identical to it when he asked me to come to the Academy in the first place,// he said, trying to keep his tone as dismissive as possible.

Raven scanned the letter, then tucked it carefully back inside the envelope and set it back on the nightstand. "You should be very proud," she reiterated. "They obviously value you and what you could bring to their team. But you should not rush into a decision, especially if you are so uncertain now."

She rested her head against his shoulder again. "Have you spoken to your friends here of this?" she said. "Or your instructors? What advice have they given you?"

Jonothon gave his head a shake.

//I haven't spoken to anybody yet,// he admitted. //I have no idea how the other kids would take it. And Sean and Emma lately have been...//

He wrinkled his nose. Hopefully, that on its own would speak volumes about just how Sean and Emma had been, lately.

//I think this is th'sort of choice that I need to make for myself, Sunshine. No Lee, punching me in the arm and telling me that I better take Xavier up on his offer. No trying to catch Sean on a good day...//

"Of course," Raven said. "I was merely curious. When must you inform them of your decision?"

She shifted again, catching his face in her hands. "You must do what will make you think is best, and I will be happy for you whatever choice you make.

"Unless this Professor Xavier does not allow you visitors," she added teasingly. "Then I would be forced to complain."

//If th'Professor doesn't allow visitors, I'd be forced to tell him where he can go put that shiny new belt with the oversized X-logo on it, luv,// he leaned forward a little, pressing his forehead against hers.

He'd missed that. There was a lot about this that he missed, really. And he was going to show her as much by thinking a soft kiss in her direction. For all that his emotional projections were sloppy, his imagination was still working just fine.

//Th'letter doesn't have any sort of 'RSVP' date on it,// he added, a moment later. //I think Xavier at least understands that decisions like this one take time. I can't just pull an answer out of my arse in an instant, can I?//

"Mmm," Raven sighed in contentment, thoroughly distracted for a moment, sending him the feel of her lips sliding over his. "You are out of practice with this, are you not? It is lucky I am here now to help you."

Oh, wait, they were having a serious conversation. "No, this is not something you can decide quickly. Take your time, and wait until it feels right," she said. "You are not obligated to say yes, nor are you required to remain here. Do what is right for you."

Jono was horribly out of practise with this. And was absolutely not complaining that Raven was getting them slightly off topic, for that moment. In fact, he was agreeing with her. It was terribly lucky that he would have a bit of assistance in getting himself back up to snuff in the kissing department.

//What's right for me...//

What was right for him?

More kissing. That part was totally right for him. Absolutely.

//I'll figure it out. Soon. Ish. Soonish.//

He sent another kiss toward her. It might have been a while for him, but at least he was making up the difference in enthusiasm.

//Thank you for listening, Sunshine.//

"I will always listen, or distract, or whatever you need," Raven said, sending him another kiss, deeper this time, letting her shields begin to slide down. Three weeks after Kaeleer and the trip to the future they were finally back to full strength, but around Jono, she didn't need them.

"I love you," she whispered.

//Love you, too,// Jono murmured back, his head spinning as he felt her lips against his. Several months of hearing comments like 'The amazing mouthless boy' had managed to do a number on him. Three seconds of kissing like this was doing wonders to undo all of that. //Missed you. Need t'visit more often.//

All the time. Neverending visit? Why had he left the island, again?

Lord, she was an amazing kisser...

"I have missed you, too," Raven said, as if her actions weren't making that obvious. "Talking to you, kissing you, just touching you."

She tilted her head, nuzzling at his neck. "There are no classes this week, and I do not think it will be missed if I do not open 'Dite's shop on Tuesday. So for however long that is in your world, I am yours."

//Three weeks? Four? Five? When I first found myself on the island, time here went slower. And now it seems t'be rushing by. I've got no clue, beyond 'more.'//

And he certainly wasn't complaining about more, either.

//I can set up my phone to tell me th'date and time in Fandom, though, I think,// said he who was about as software-literate as a radish. //Probably.//

"I left Karla a note to tell her where I was going, as we are sharing an alcove in the cabins," Raven said, moving one hand to slide her fingers through his hair. "I am certain if I am needed in Fandom, she will call me. But I think I am needed here more."

And she needed to be there more.

furnaceface

2011-06-28 01:22 am (UTC) (Link)

//Definitely needed here more,// Jono decided. //Karla gets you all th'time. She's just going to have to share, Sunshine.//

Because that was just the way it was. So decreed the guy who was clinging pretty adamantly to Raven at that moment. He was never letting go. Never.

//And I meant it, about that going to Boston thing. Gets us away from here for a while. If yer planning on sticking about for a bit, I think we could both probably use a break from the others being... themselves.//

Much as Jono liked them, and all.
