The Massachusetts Academy, Early Spring
Jono had a dilemma.

Or, more accurately, Jono had a whole host of dilemmas, all wrapped up into one tidy little envelope, sitting on his nightstand and staring him in the face. In part, of course, because of his face. The letter was, after all, from Xavier. And accepting the proposal in the letter meant a good many things. Leaving Massachusetts. Leaving Angelo and Jubilee and the others behind. He'd done that once before, when he wound up on Fandom Island, and he wasn't entirely certain if doing it now counted as running, or simply moving forward.

And there was the rest of the dilemma, there. Things had been insane for the members of Generation X, lately. Busy, heartbreaking, not particularly easy, and everybody was dealing with these things in their own ways. Surprisingly, the biggest changes to be seen were in Emma and Sean, both of whom were beginning to worry the surviving members of the team. Now would be some pretty rotten timing for Jono to take Xavier up on his offer to join the X-Men. Right?

His eyebrows furrowed a little as he stared again at the letter, and then shook his head, shoving it into his nightstand. He'd sleep on it for a few more nights, and maybe that would help him figure out just where he wanted to go from here. In the meantime, he was pulling out his phone and firing off a short e-mail to his friends.

Believe it or not, I miss you guys. How have things been?

Jonothon's conversation-starting skills needed work. But it was either this, or listen to Paige go on about rescuing trees from some money-hungry oil corporation for the millionth time.

[NFB for distance, but Open for texts, e-mails, surprise multidimensional visits, anything you don't need a mouth for. If you figure your character got Jono's amazingly verbose e-mail, they did, sure! I'm actually around again! Yay, around again!]

"Even Fandom is not immune to such losses," Raven said, shifting her arms so she had both wrapped around him, thinking of Triela and Karla's friend Katniss. "But at least there you were more free to be yourself." And those deaths had been caused by their own homes, not Fandom itself.

"Adrienne is gone now?" she said. "And the other students as well?"

//She is, and they are,// Jono agreed, shrugging his shoulders a little and leaning in a little closer to her. //We've been training harder, since. If nothing else, there's that.//

2011-06-27 02:46 am (UTC) (Link)

"And saving children, and dealing with a...Juggernaut?" Raven said.

She rubbed her hand against his shoulders and the back of his neck. The leather wrappings were a barrier, but she could cheat and let him feel her touch against his skin to try to ease some of the tension from him.

2011-06-27 02:56 am (UTC) (Link)

Jonothon's eyes slid closed at the touch. He was going to have to work on staying awake if she kept that up. Just being close to her had him more relaxed than he'd felt in weeks, and then that?

He'd be bloody terrible company if he just happened to start napping on her, unfortunately.

//Juggernaut's his name,// he explained, as if that really explained anything at all. //Or his codename, at least. Massive bloke. Can take any punishment a person can throw at him. Showed up one day alongside one of Sean's cousins and someone who wasn't quite one of our other old, dead teammates.//

The mortality rate for being a mutant in spandex...

//We sent them on their merry way without too much trouble, eventually.//

2011-06-27 03:08 am (UTC) (Link)

"Have you had any time to relax and enjoy yourself?" Raven said. "I hope it has not been constant fighting all these months for you."

She turned to the side so she'd have a little more leverage while rubbing his back. No, she wasn't helping matters much with regards to staying awake, but she wanted to encourage his relaxing.

2011-06-27 12:03 pm (UTC) (Link)

//Some,// Jono offered. //It's been more training than fighting, for th'most part. We're not really X-Men yet. We're kind of more... in limbo, with the occasional idiot swooping in and trying t'kill us, or kidnapping one of us, or...//

Come to think of it, most of the trouble they'd had lately was a direct result of some psycho or other painting a target on Emma and Sean. Huh.

//... We're waiting for our invitations to become part of th'real deal.//

And he couldn't help but glance awkwardly at the nightstand that held his own.

2011-06-27 12:22 pm (UTC) (Link)

Raven followed his gaze to the envelope sitting on the nightstand. "They have asked you to join them?" she asked. "To be one of these X-Men?"

That might explain the uncertainty she'd picked up on. She wasn't sure how she felt about that herself yet.

2011-06-27 12:32 pm (UTC) (Link)

See him jump for joy, there? No? Go figure.

//On th'one hand, they're actually out there making a difference. Doing things that mean something, instead of prancing about what's left of their schoolyard in magenta tights with the occasional incidental act of heroism thrown in for good measure. "Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears us." Proving that not all mutants are overpowered madmen. I should be honoured to be asked to be a part of that.//

2011-06-27 01:19 pm (UTC) (Link)

"But you are not?" Raven said, resting her hand on his arm. "What are concerned about? How do you truly feel?"

She could feel that, but she couldn't sense the reasons behind the emotions.

2011-06-27 01:58 pm (UTC) (Link)

//I don't know, luv,// Jono sighed, closing his eyes and turning to pull her into his arms. //I'm flattered that Xavier hand-picked me for his little band of heroes. Any one of us in Generation X would leap at th'chance to join. But...//

He faltered, shaking his head. There were words for this, he was certain of it, but the best that he could manage was a small taste of the loyalty that he felt toward the other members of the team, projected her way with a slight clumsiness that suggested that it had been a while since he'd attempted to send anybody anything more than his thoughts.

//We've been through so much together. I took off on them once already, it just doesn't feel... right.//

2011-06-27 02:38 pm (UTC) (Link)

Raven closed her eyes as well as she settled against him. "You should be flattered, from what I know of these X-Men," she said. "And very proud. They must truly value your skills to wish you to join them. But I think you should follow your heart in this." And if he said he didn't have one, she'd thump him.

"If you are not comfortable joining them yet, perhaps you should tell them as much," she said, snuggling closer. "That you are honored by their invitation, but you have obligations to your teammates here, and you must see that they will be safe without you before you may leave them. The X-Men can only admire your loyalty and consideration of your teammates' well-being."

2011-06-27 07:10 pm (UTC) (Link)

//I suppose there is that,// Jono agreed. //I was planning on just... sleeping on it for a while longer. I mean, if Xavier wants me on his team, he wants me there for a reason... right?//

It was entirely possible that Jono was mostly just hoping that if he slept on it long enough, the invitation would revoke itself and he wouldn't have to make the decision.

2011-06-27 07:35 pm (UTC) (Link)

"I do not know him or his thoughts, but I do not think he would invite you to join them if he did not want you there," Raven said.

She glanced over at the envelope again. "May I read it?" she said.

2011-06-27 08:53 pm (UTC) (Link)

Jono blinked his eyes open at that, and then nodded a little, reaching one hand over to his nightstand to collect the letter so that he could offer it to her.

Inside, two pages, typed neatly under Xavier's letterhead, formally outlining the purpose of Xavier's School, the role of the X-Men in the world today, and exactly why Jonothon was a prime candidate for the team.

//It's all a bunch of formal gibberish. I got a letter near identical to it when he asked me to come to the Academy in the first place,// he said, trying to keep his tone as dismissive as possible.

2011-06-27 09:09 pm (UTC) (Link)

Raven scanned the letter, then tucked it carefully back inside the envelope and set it back on the nightstand. "You should be very proud," she reiterated. "They obviously value you and what you could bring to their team. But you should not rush into a decision, especially if you are so uncertain now."

She rested her head against his shoulder again. "Have you spoken to your friends here of this?" she said. "Or your instructors? What advice have they given you?"
