The Massachusetts Academy, Early Spring
Jono had a dilemma.

Or, more accurately, Jono had a whole host of dilemmas, all wrapped up into one tidy little envelope, sitting on his nightstand and staring him in the face. In part, of course, because of his face. The letter was, after all, from Xavier. And accepting the proposal in the letter meant a good many things. Leaving Massachusetts. Leaving Angelo and Jubilee and the others behind. He'd done that once before, when he wound up on Fandom Island, and he wasn't entirely certain if doing it now counted as running, or simply moving forward.

And there was the rest of the dilemma, there. Things had been insane for the members of Generation X, lately. Busy, heartbreaking, not particularly easy, and everybody was dealing with these things in their own ways. Surprisingly, the biggest changes to be seen were in Emma and Sean, both of whom were beginning to worry the surviving members of the team. Now would be some pretty rotten timing for Jono to take Xavier up on his offer to join the X-Men. Right?

His eyebrows furrowed a little as he stared again at the letter, and then shook his head, shoving it into his nightstand. He'd sleep on it for a few more nights, and maybe that would help him figure out just where he wanted to go from here. In the meantime, he was pulling out his phone and firing off a short e-mail to his friends.

Believe it or not, I miss you guys. How have things been?

Jonothon's conversation-starting skills needed work. But it was either this, or listen to Paige go on about rescuing trees from some money-hungry oil corporation for the millionth time.

[NFB for distance, but Open for texts, e-mails, surprise multidimensional visits, anything you don't need a mouth for. If you figure your character got Jono's amazingly verbose e-mail, they did, sure! I'm actually around again! Yay, around again!]

Raven had been on her laptop in the library and smiled when she saw Jono's message pop up.

One of the library books was playing music and trying to make the other books follow it and run away this morning. I had to put it in the Netherverse as it would not behave.

How are you? I miss you!

2011-06-26 07:49 pm (UTC) (Link)

And when Jono got Raven's message, he... well... almost smiled. It was a near-thing, all things considered. Either way, he set to replying to it in short order.

I miss you too, luv. Things have been a bit busy around here, I'm sorry for not getting in touch with you sooner.

Hopefully escaping library books have been the worst of your worries lately? Lord knows they always took some sort of perverse pleasure out of giving me a difficult time during my shifts, as well.

I hope it has been a good kind of busy and not a bad kind, she wrote back, fretting a bit as was her wont.

The island is in a place called Atlantis now, which is very lovely. We remained in the West until last weekend, at which point we were invaded by mechanical spiders. Fortunately they did not seem to do much damage.

2011-06-26 08:09 pm (UTC) (Link)

Jono took a few minutes to sit and mull over his response to that particular message, for a few reasons and then some. Maybe he'd go with the slightly less traumatic topics first, and then go from there?

Atlantis? Is it terribly wet this time of year?

Well. Could anyone blame him for asking?

The rest were the traumatic bits. They took a bit more thought.

It's been... a busy sort of busy. I'm fine. Most of us are. We tend to keep pulling out of rough situations by the skin of our teeth, for the most part.

There were some... fairly notable exceptions, granted.

It isn't like we didn't know it would be dangerous when we joined, of course.

The thing Raven hated about email was not being able to feel the emotions of the person she was talking to. It put her on an even playing field with everyone else, but it wasn't something she was accustomed to. Or entirely pleased with, of course.

It has been sunny and pleasant, she wrote. Much like Hawaii, but not as warm.

You are truly well? You are not just saying that so I will not worry, are you? Because you know I will worry regardless, so there is no need to do so.

Raven logic was special.

I can teleport to you as soon as my shift is done. Even if all is well I would like to see you. It has been three weeks here in Fandom. Has it been the same for you?

Alice was at the community center, checking her e-mail. All right, perhaps she was regretting the destruction of her phone. It had been necessary, but she might be missing contact from others.

Why should we be incredulous? I believe the store misses you. Are there any CDs you wish for me to pass messages to?

2011-06-27 12:08 am (UTC) (Link)

While Jonothon wouldn't put it past any particular part of Fandom Island to be able to actually miss a person, he still had his doubts, to some degree, when it came to Groovy Tunes and its capacity to miss him.

Still, he did rather miss the music shop, and Alice was... Alice. He'd actually kind of enjoy a little bit of talking in circles, this way.

Every single Grunge and Post-Grunge album released after the spring of 1997, actually. Tell them that I'm on my way, and I'll catch up with them again shortly. They're truly missed.

Have you been keeping well, Alice?

2011-06-27 12:16 am (UTC) (Link)

If I should fail and accidentally send your regards to a few alternative and post-punk albums, or ones prior to 1997, will I be forgiven?

He had to expect she'd be odd. They'd met, after all.

I've destroyed a phone and bonded with the girl who used to bed down with the same boy I did. I'm in a fair bit of trouble, but I'm starting to hope it's nothing I can't outrun. And yourself?

2011-06-27 12:24 am (UTC) (Link)

I think I can find it in my heart to forgive you. Pass on my regards to them as well, if you wish. They were good company during long shifts, after all.

Jono got along just fine with 'odd.' It was a mutant thing, perhaps.

I haven't been in more trouble than I can outrun lately, myself. That's better than nothing, I suppose. Missing the island perhaps a touch more than I should, I admit. Is there anything I can do to help with whatever trouble you're in?

... He'd been playing hero a lot lately. Offering help was force of habit, now.

2011-06-27 12:46 am (UTC) (Link)

That was due some consideration.

Are you in touch with other graduates? she asked. That was an important question, first. Other than secret-keeping, there's not much else I need. I'm waiting this out, and then I can flee. I must be patient in the meantime, but I've little skill at that.

This was a wee bit of an understatement.

I appreciate the sentiment. The store is much the same as ever. I'm glad that your trouble hasn't caught up to you, yet, or that there isn't much nipping at your heels. Those might be the same thing; I'm not so certain any more.

2011-06-27 01:41 am (UTC) (Link)

They aren't quite the same thing, really. There's plenty of trouble to go around. There usually is. I've just been able to keep from letting it get the best of me, so far. We'll see how long that lasts, I suppose.

Sadly, this was sunshiny optimism for Jonothon.

I'm not in touch with any other graduates that I'm aware of, lately. I've been somewhat rotten at being in touch with anybody at all, I'll admit. If nothing else, I can keep a secret thanks to that.

Squall was a little late noticing the email, but it made his day.

I miss you, too. Things have been okay. The usual Fandom stuff, mostly. How have things been for you?

2011-06-27 07:15 pm (UTC) (Link)

The lateness meant that Jono didn't get Squall's reply for a few days, himself, but that was quite alright. It gave him something to focus on. Something pleasant to focus on, at that.

They've been busy, mate. I got a bit of mail inviting me to join a slightly more grown-up group of mutants than the one I'm currently running with, and I'm not entirely certain what to make of it, yet.

How did things work out between you and Rinoa, by the way? Last I heard, she was being confusing again.

2011-06-27 08:16 pm (UTC) (Link)

It depends on how much responsibility you want. And how close you are to the group you're with. The people in charge probably aren't going to let someone as powerful as you just live your life, though, so be prepared to be annoyed by them.

Things worked out with Rinoa. It turned out that what she was angry at wasn't quite what we were fighting about, and her feelings were more important to me than convincing her I was right. Relationships are hard.

2011-06-27 08:56 pm (UTC) (Link)

Being annoyed, I can live with. The sort that the X-Men enrolls, and even the man in charge, all have a fairly impressive power set. At least I wouldn't be the only one being annoyed, if it ever came to that.

And relationships are hard. But most things worth having are, I've found. It's good to hear that you've figured it out, though.
