Hannibal's House (In Which Jono Pretends to be Computer Illiterate), Wednesday Afternoon
Jono was bored. Bored out of the half of his bloody skull that he still had left. And normally when he was that bored, he found something to do. Generally, it was even something stupid to do. Go back to Westchester to see if Logan needed help with the students, pick a fight with something much larger than himself, contemplate a career in the entertainment industry...

Jono did not do stupid by halves, really.

Today, none of those things really appealed. Jono was extra bored. Which meant that he was going to do something drastic. Today, Jonothon was going to flop backward on the sofa, pull out his phone, and browse Twitter. Twitter, where he was following mostly bands, music news feeds, actual news feeds, the occasional member of the X-Men or Fandomite, and a museum or two.

The horror.

//Huh,// he muttered as he scrolled by a tweet by the French Archives. //Beak and all.//

[OOC: When the Archives de France uses a screencap from your fake fiance's canon to advertise a lecture on gastronomy, that is an opportunity that cannot be passed up. Open!]

Hannibal looked up from his position at the other end of the sofa, where his book was resting on Jono's feet and he was pointedly not commenting on Jono's sudden computer literacy. "Hm?"

Really, not commenting was for the best. The moment Hannibal did, after all, that would be the moment Jono suddenly forgot how to scroll or something.

//Those songbirds that they eat whole? Ortolans, aren't they?// Jono turned his phone around to show Hannibal the picture. //Sorry, it just showed up while I was browsing.//

And Jono being Jono, he couldn't resist the urge to comment.

It was almost as though Hannibal knew that about him!

Hannibal looked at the picture. He raised an eyebrow. Then he smirked. "Where on earth did you find that picture?"

//Ah...// Jono looked at his phone again. //The Archives de France used it. It looks like they're doing a lecture on gastronomy and food presentation or something of the sort.//

And now he was peering suspiciously over the phone at Hannibal.

//Why?//

Hannibal smirked. "I wonder if they know whose food they're advertising with."

Jono looked down at his phone again. And then back to Hannibal. Back and forth a couple more times.

//You're joking. Really?//

Hannibal leaned in closer. "And those aren't birds, either."

There was a long pause while Jono stared Hannibal in the eye. And then he slooowly put his phone down.

//... Bloody hell, Hannibal.//

He didn't want to know. He really didn't. How did you make birds out of people? What part of the people was the bird?!

never_dull

2016-09-28 08:23 pm (UTC) (Link)

Well, it wasn't any one part, really. You just had to find the right bits and ingredients.

He was an artist!

Hannibal shrugged. "I was rather pleased with the result. I didn't realize the image had become widespread."

Jono squinted at Hannibal for a moment or two more, and then, tentatively, he reached for his phone again. It was like a train wreck. A tiny, bird-shaped, battered train wreck. Made of people.

//... Well, I never would've guessed. Apparently neither could they.//

Yeah, now he was squinting at the phone. Not in horror. Just trying to figure out what was what. Horror would come later. Probably.

"I'm surprised they would use it regardless," Hannibal said. "The French government has outlawed owning, selling, killing, or eating ortolans for some years now." He raised an eyebrow. "It's a very cruel practice."

Not that that was necessarily a bad thing, but he generally reserved his cruelty for his own species.

//Well, perhaps they didn't understand the significance of the bird, or where the photo came from. They're certainly presented attractively...//

Or, well, they were on fire. But there was a fig in the background! He could see the fig.

Great. Now Jono was staring at the fig and wondering if the fig was also people.

Sometimes a fig was just a fig, Jono.

"Thank you." Hannibal smirked. "I'm certain they don't know where the photograph came from; I doubt they'd be using it otherwise." He looked thoughtful. "I should tell them the birds look fake. Or complain about the practice of eating ortolans. Perhaps both. Not as myself, of course," he said to forestall objection.

Trolling the Archives de France would be a terrible reason to be captured.

//I...// Jono blinked, and once again slowly looked up from his phone at Hannibal. //Wait, what?//

He knew you liked to mess with people, Hannibal, but what?

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at him. "What part don't you understand?"
